Choosing between Odoo and Sage is rarely a simple feature-by-feature contest. Odoo vs Sage is really a question of how your company works today, how it intends to grow and how much it wants to adapt the software versus adapt its own processes. This page compares Odoo with Sage X3, Sage's ERP for mid-sized businesses, so that you can decide which one deserves a place on your shortlist. If you are still weighing up the whole market, our guide to choosing an ERP is a good starting point.
Odoo or Sage: the short answer
Neither product is better in the abstract. Odoo suits companies that want a modular platform, broad functional coverage under one roof and the freedom to add applications as needs evolve. Sage X3 suits organisations with demanding finance, manufacturing or distribution requirements that value an established vendor with deep roots in accounting. Many UK buyers already know Sage through its accounting products, which makes the discussion emotional as much as technical; try to keep it factual.
The honest approach is to describe your processes first, then ask integrators of both products to show how they would cover them. You can read our Odoo page and Sage page for a profile of each product.
Two different philosophies
Odoo: a suite of modular applications
Odoo is built as a collection of applications (accounting, sales, inventory, manufacturing, CRM, project, website and more) that share one database and one interface. You start with the applications you need and add others later. Odoo announces 50 main applications and a community that has contributed more than 50 000 additional ones, so the catalogue is very wide, although the quality and maintenance of third-party modules vary.
The company is large and growing: it claims more than 28 million users worldwide, ranging from a single user to more than 300 000 for its largest customers. It also reports more than 8 000 employees, more than 21 000 partners and 17 offices. These figures come from Odoo itself, so read them as the vendor's own claims rather than independent audit.
Sage X3: an ERP with a finance heritage
Sage is a British software company best known for accounting and payroll. Sage X3 is its ERP for mid-sized businesses, covering finance, purchasing, sales, inventory and production in a single system. Its strength lies in rigorous financial management, traceability and the ability to support multi-site and multi-entity organisations with structured processes.
The trade-off is that Sage X3 is typically configured by a specialist partner and follows a more formal implementation path. That structure reassures many finance directors; it can feel heavy to a smaller team that wants to move quickly.
Functional comparison
Both systems cover the core ERP perimeter. The differences appear at the edges and in how the functions are packaged.
- Finance and accounting: Sage X3 is strong on multi-entity consolidation, analytical accounting and audit trails. Odoo's accounting is capable and well integrated with sales and purchasing, and suits most small and mid-sized structures; very complex group reporting should be tested carefully.
- Manufacturing: both support bills of materials, routings and production orders. Sage X3 is generally chosen where traceability and process rigour are paramount. Odoo covers planning and shop-floor needs in a lighter way. Our manufacturing ERP guide explains what to look for.
- Distribution and inventory: both handle multi-warehouse stock, purchasing and sales flows. See our page on ERP for wholesale and distribution.
- Sales, CRM and e-commerce: Odoo includes CRM, a website builder and e-commerce within the same platform, which reduces the number of tools to connect. With Sage X3 these usually come from adjacent products or integrations.
- Project and services: Odoo offers project management and timesheets as native applications, relevant for professional services firms.

Technology and deployment
Licensing and openness
Odoo has two editions. Odoo 19 Community is released under the LGPLv3 licence. Odoo 19 Enterprise is released under the Odoo Enterprise Edition v1.0 licence and may be used only with a valid Enterprise subscription covering the right number of users. For buyers, this means the open-source label applies to the Community edition; most business functions that companies expect, such as advanced accounting, are in Enterprise. Our guide to open-source ERP explains the practical consequences.
Sage X3 is proprietary software. You do not have access to the source code, and extensions follow Sage's own development framework.
Hosting options
Odoo can be deployed as Odoo Online (software as a service), on Odoo.sh or on site. The last two are tied to the Custom plan. Odoo Online is the quickest route; Odoo.sh and on-site hosting give more control over custom code, at the price of more technical responsibility. If you are unsure which model fits, read our comparison of cloud and on-premise ERP.
Sage X3 is available through cloud and hosted arrangements arranged with a partner. Ask early who operates the environment, who handles upgrades and how data is protected.
Integration and customisation
Odoo's Custom plan adds Odoo Studio, agentic AI, multi-company management and external API access. Installing Studio or adding companies is enough to move a free database to Custom, so check the plan before you build. Sage X3 offers its own tools and web services for connecting other systems, generally used by the partner who implements it.
Whichever you choose, restrict bespoke development to what truly differentiates your business. Heavy customisation makes upgrades slower and more expensive on any ERP.
What does each cost?
Costs are where the two products differ most visibly, because Odoo publishes its prices and Sage generally does not. Odoo prices are shown in euros on its website; your integrator will give you the amount in pounds sterling, so treat the figures below as indicative of structure rather than a final quote.
| Odoo plan | Price as published by Odoo |
|---|---|
| One App Free | 0 EUR, one application (plus its dependencies), on Odoo Online, unlimited users |
| Standard | 24,90 EUR per user per month (discounted from 31,10 EUR for 12 months for users ordered at the start), Odoo Online, all applications |
| Custom | 44,90 EUR per user per month (discounted from 56,90 EUR for 12 months), Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or on site; Odoo.sh costs are not included |
Odoo also lists a "light" user at 7,90 EUR per month, available through an appointment with an Odoo adviser. Paying users are those with backend access; portal users, such as customers and suppliers, are not counted as paying users. That distinction can matter if you want customers to follow orders or invoices online.
For Sage X3 there is no public price list. The cost depends on the modules, the number of users, the hosting arrangement and the partner's services. Do not assume that a published price means a cheaper project: the licence is only one line. Configuration, data migration, integrations, training and support generally account for a large share of the total. Our ERP cost guide breaks down these items, and the implementation guide shows where the effort goes.
The integrator ecosystem
An ERP is only as good as the team that sets it up. Odoo's partner network is very large, according to the vendor, and includes everything from small specialist firms to larger consultancies. That choice is an advantage, but quality varies, so look at an integrator's sector experience, references and method rather than at the size of its logo.
Sage X3 is delivered by a narrower group of specialist partners, often with deep expertise in finance and in particular industries. You will have fewer options, but the better ones know the product thoroughly.
We are not affiliated with any software vendor. Our service is free and connects you with an integrator suited to your project; the integrator carries out the work. For advice on evaluating candidates, see how to go about choosing an ERP integrator.
Verdict by company profile
A growing small or mid-sized company that wants flexibility
Odoo is usually the more natural fit. Its modular structure lets you begin with sales, inventory and accounting and add applications later, and its public pricing makes early budgeting easier. Our guide to ERP for small businesses covers what to prioritise at this stage.
A mid-sized business with demanding finance and operations
Sage X3 deserves serious consideration, particularly where multi-entity accounting, traceability and formal control are central. It is a sound choice for a finance director who wants a rigorous framework and is comfortable with a structured implementation.
A company already using Sage accounting
Familiarity is an argument, but not a decisive one. If your existing Sage product has reached its limits, compare Sage X3 and Odoo on equal terms. Migrating data between systems is manageable with the right plan; our ERP migration guide explains how.
A business that sells online or runs a service model
Odoo's built-in CRM, website, e-commerce and project applications reduce the number of separate tools. Compare this with ERP for e-commerce requirements before deciding.
A company comparing more than two options
Odoo and Sage X3 are not the only candidates. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Oracle NetSuite often reach the same shortlists, and our comparisons hub puts them side by side, including Odoo vs Business Central.
How to run a fair comparison
- Write down your processes and pain points before you speak to any vendor. A short requirements document is enough to start.
- Ask both integrators for a demonstration on your own scenarios, not a generic presentation: a purchase order, a production run, a VAT return, a month-end close.
- Request a quote for an identical scope so that you compare like with like, including migration, training and support.
- Check references in your sector and ask what went wrong as well as what went well. Our list of common ERP project mistakes can help you frame the questions.
- Test regulatory readiness for UK VAT and digital reporting, and consider the effect of e-invoicing developments on your invoicing flows.
Once you have a shortlist, you can request an introduction to integrators who work with the products you are considering.
Frequently asked questions
Is Odoo cheaper than Sage?
Odoo publishes its subscription prices, which makes a first estimate easy, whereas Sage pricing is quoted case by case through a reseller. The licence is only part of the bill, though: configuration, data migration, training and support often weigh as much. Compare complete quotes for the same scope rather than licence lines alone.
Is Sage X3 the same as Sage 50 or Sage 200?
No. Sage offers several products aimed at different company sizes. Sage X3 is its ERP for mid-sized businesses with more demanding operations, such as manufacturing and distribution. Smaller accounting-led products belong to other ranges, so check exactly which Sage product a quote refers to.
Can Odoo handle UK VAT and Making Tax Digital?
UK tax reporting depends on the localisation modules installed and on how your integrator configures them. Odoo has a localisation framework for this, but you should ask your integrator to demonstrate VAT returns and digital submission on your own data before signing. The same test applies to Sage.
Which is easier to customise, Odoo or Sage X3?
Odoo is built around modules and an open ecosystem, so adding or adapting applications is usually straightforward. Sage X3 can also be tailored, but changes tend to go through the vendor's tooling and a specialist partner. In both cases, the amount of custom work you accept should be a deliberate decision, because it affects upgrades.
Do I need an integrator for either system?
For anything beyond a very simple set-up, yes. An experienced integrator scopes the project, configures the processes, migrates your data and trains your teams. Our free service puts you in touch with an integrator suited to your project, whichever ERP you favour.
